Maverick’s Moody Munchies: Homemade Dog Cookies That Smell Good Enough for Humans

Maverick has been feeling a little down lately, and who can blame him? Losing Penelope has been tough on all of us, and while extra snuggles help, sometimes a little comfort food is in order. So, in true farm kitchen fashion, I decided to whip up a batch of homemade dog cookies. Because let’s be honest—what better way to a pup’s heart than through his stomach?
These cookies were super easy to make, required only about 30 minutes of my time, and, most importantly, got Maverick’s sad-dog-seal of approval.

The Ingredients (AKA Things That Made the Kitchen Smell Amazing)
1 cup pumpkin (The rest of the can went to the chickens, who acted like they just won the poultry lottery.)
½ cup peanut butter
2 eggs
¼ cup coconut oil
2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
For the Fancy Glaze (Because My Dog Deserves It)
2 tbsp coconut oil
¼ cup peanut butter

The Process (A Highly Scientific Method of Mixing, Rolling, and Hoping for the Best)
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. (Bonus points if you have a dog staring at you intensely, making sure you don’t mess this up.)
Roll the dough out to about ¼-½ inch thick. (I was in a hurry and made mine thicker, so they turned out a bit crumbly—but Maverick didn’t seem to mind.)
Cut into cute shapes… or squares… or whatever your patience level allows.
Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
While they bake, mix the glaze ingredients together.
Once out of the oven, drizzle the glaze over the warm cookies and pop them in the fridge to set.

At this point, the kitchen smelled so good that Andrew came out to investigate, asking what I was baking. Honestly, with those ingredients, I don’t blame him. If he had grabbed one, I probably wouldn’t have stopped him (but I might have judged him a little).
Final Verdict?
Maverick loved them. He happily crunched away, tail wagging, and for the first time in days, he looked like his old self again. Mission accomplished.
So, if you have a pup who needs a little pick-me-up (or just want your house to smell amazing), give these a try! Just be warned: you may have to fight off curious human family members who suddenly become very interested in dog treats.
